Required Documents

All Chevening applicants must submit their education documents, references, and one unconditional UK university offer. The JN Tata Endowment for the Higher Education of Indians has been helping Indian students since 1892 with loan scholarships for higher studies. People consider it a matter of great pride to be called a ‘JN Tata Scholar’. There are now more than 5,419 JN Tata Scholars all over the world, making it a renowned name among study abroad scholarships for Indian students.

Loan Scholarship Process

The J. N. Tata Endowment awards a one-time loan scholarship to Indians at the beginning of an academic year for full-time Postgraduate/Ph.D./Postdoctoral/Research fellowships studies abroad, in all fields, irrespective of caste, creed, gender, or community. This is a unique offering among study abroad scholarships for Indian students. The amount of the loan scholarship is determined on the basis of the norms laid down for the purpose, and does not cover the full cost of studies, ranging between Rs.1,00,000/- and Rs.10,00,000/-. All selected scholars do not necessarily qualify for the maximum amount.

The selected scholars may also be recommended for partial travel assistance (a maximum of Rs.50,000/-) and a gift award from allied Trusts as may be decided at the sole discretion of the Trustees of the concerned Trusts. The gift award ranges between Rs.2,00,000/- and Rs.7,50,000/- and depends on the academic performance of the candidates in the course for which they are awarded the JN Tata loan scholarship—an added benefit for recipients of these study abroad scholarships for Indian students. The gift award will be considered only for those who submit the relevant academic performance proof such as a transcript and progress report.

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates should be Indians, not older than 45 years as on June 30, 2022, and graduates of a recognised Indian University with at least 60% marks on average in their undergraduate or post-graduate studies—key requirements for one of the most sought-after study abroad scholarships for Indian students. If the undergraduate degree is not from a recognised University in India, candidates are not eligible to apply.

Candidates who did not get selected in the previous year/earlier for the loan scholarship and candidates who could not avail of the loan scholarship when they were selected are eligible to apply.

Candidates who are at the end of the 1st year and entering into the second year of their overseas studies (Fall 2022 – Spring 2023) are also eligible to apply. This is applicable only if the minimum duration of the course is 2 years and there is at least one full academic year remaining to complete at the time of award of the loan scholarship, normally by July of any calendar year.
JN Tata scholars who have fully repaid their existing loan scholarship amount are eligible to apply.

Candidates in the final year of their degree courses and those awaiting results are eligible to apply. Candidates may apply even if they do not have the admission/offer letters at the time of making the application, from the Universities to which they have applied for the academic year 2022-2023. However, they must update their application status with the Endowment once they secure admission by sending an appropriate email to jnte@tatatruts.org.

Candidates going abroad for seminars, conferences, training, workshops, paper presentations, undergraduate studies, and any post-graduate degree/diploma/certificates through Distance learning or online medium are not eligible to apply.

The course to which candidates are admitted must be recognized as a Graduate Program (post-graduate in Indian terminology).

The Interview

Candidates shortlisted based on the online test will be called for an interview, the final leg in the selection process for these study abroad scholarships for Indian students. Such candidates should upload scanned copies of the required documents on the application portal in the ‘Upload documents section’ in the application form, before the time of the interview.

The rigorous technical interview, conducted from April onwards, in person at Mumbai or through video conference via Skype/Microsoft Teams/Zoom by the Director of the Endowment and a subject expert, carries the highest weightage in the selection process. ‘Technical’ refers to evaluation of candidates’ understanding of their subjects – current and future.

Candidates should come prepared with knowledge of their subjects and chosen areas of interest with any specialisation, as shown in their application form. They will be examined in depth and detail in their current subject and chosen area of study, and greater weight will be given to depth of understanding of the chosen area of study and career path.

Candidates in the beginning of the 2nd year would be assessed also on their first year/semester transcripts of the overseas studies.

The final selection of scholars for the award of the loan scholarship is based on the following criteria:
(1) Performance at the interview
(2) Score at the online test
(3) Score based on academic results, GRE/GMAT/IELTS/TOEFL scores, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, research work, statement of purpose, and work experience.

All the Awards will be announced together latest by the first week of July by mail. The Trustees’ decision on the award of scholarships is final. Correspondence in this regard will not be entertained.

Formalities to be Completed

The candidate and the guarantor (preferably a parent or a relative) will have to visit the Administrative Office of the Endowment, by prior appointment, to complete the necessary formalities, after obtaining the visa. They will be required to enter into a legal agreement with the Trustees and provide documentary evidence of the capacity of the guarantor to repay the loan.

Candidates may repay the loan scholarship amount in full in five equal instalments of 20% between the third and seventh year. Candidates may begin to repay earlier than year three if they choose to—an appealing feature of these study abroad scholarships for Indian students.

The Asian Development Bank/Japan Scholarship Program (JSP) offers about 150 postgraduate scholarships a year for studies in economics, management, science and technology, and other development-related fields at participating academic institutions. Eligibility requirements

The candidate should:

• Be a national of an ADB borrowing member country and Japanese ODA scholarship-eligible country.
• Not hold dual citizenship of any developed country.
• Have gained admission to an approved master’s course at a Designated Institution.
• Hold a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent with a superior academic record.
• Have at least two (2) years of full-time professional working experience (acquired after a university degree) at the time of application. The candidate must have proficiency in oral and written English communication skills to be able to pursue studies.
• Not be more than 35 years old at the time of application, unless waived in exceptional cases with the expressed endorsement of the Government of Japan.
• Be in good health.
• Agree to return and work in his/her home country for at least two (2) years after completion of studies under the Program in order to contribute to its development.
• Not be Executive Directors, Alternate Directors, management, staff, and consultants of ADB, or the close relatives of the aforementioned by blood or adoption with the term “close relative” defined as: spouse, mother, stepmother, father, stepfather, sister, stepsister, brother, stepbrother, son, daughter, aunt, uncle, niece, or nephew.
• Not be staff of ADB–JSP Designated Institutions.
• Not be living or working in a country other than his/her home country.
• Not be already enrolled in graduate degree programs.

Procedures for Applying

1. Applicant requests information and application forms from the chosen partner institution.

2. Applicant completes required documents for application including ADB-JSP information sheet.

3. Applicant sends documents to institution.

4. Institution evaluates and decides on admission and applicant.

5. Institution sends shortlist of candidates to ADB.

6. ADB reviews submission from institutions.

7. ADB recommends awardees based on its selection criteria to the Japanese executive director for approval.

8. ADB selects scholars and informs institution.

9. Institution informs all scholars.

Scholarships are open to all Indian citizens who are resident in India at the time of application, making it a significant resource for study abroad scholarships for Indian students. Candidates are normally expected to hold a good first degree from a recognized university in India. Indian citizens who hold a good undergraduate degree from a recognized university outside India must have resided continuously and been employed or been studying in India for at least two years after their under-graduation. People having a postgraduate degree (e.g., Master’s or PhD) from a university outside India are not eligible; those who have started but not completed a postgraduate degree outside India are also ineligible.

The Inlaks Foundation was established in 1976 by Indoo Shivdasani to incorporate his existing philanthropic activities and to provide a permanent, independent body for the expansion of these activities. The Foundation has now been renamed the Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation.

The Foundation focuses on providing scholarships, grants, and awards in various fields to outstanding young Indians to enable them to develop their professional, scientific, artistic, and cultural abilities, both abroad and in India. It prides itself on being open to a wide range of subjects, many of which are not covered by other fund-giving bodies—making it a unique option among study abroad scholarships for Indian students. Over the last four decades, more than 460 scholars have benefited from overseas scholarships while over 600 others have received awards and Take-Off Grants in India and abroad. Opportunities in India are offered through the Inlaks India Foundation.

The list of Inlaks alumni reflects the diversity of scholars that the Foundation has supported. Today many are leaders in their chosen fields the world over.

The key to the Inlaks approach is recognising and honouring individual talent. The Foundation looks for the unusual, searches out the special, and spots people with promise. And once convinced, the Foundation does everything possible to encourage the candidate—an approach that resonates with the aspirations of study abroad scholarships for Indian students.

In 2008, the Foundation instituted the Inlaks Research and Travel Grant to enable registered PhD students of Indian universities to undertake short-term visits to institutions abroad to collect material, use facilities, and consult experts.

The Foundation supports the causes of conservation and biodiversity, which has led to the creation of the Inlaks Ravi Sankaran (RS) Programme. Within this programme, the foundation supports three kinds of activities: study toward a Master’s degree in an institution abroad; an internship with an institution abroad; and research or implementation projects within India.

In the last few decades, Indian art has enjoyed a vibrant and flourishing presence globally, although the financial support to young artists entering the domain has remained limited. With this in mind, in 2012 the Fine Arts Award was enhanced and artist residencies were offered as part of the award to young emerging artists.

The Foundation has stepped up its support to the arts in many fields. An annual Curatorial Lab was supported and funded at the School of Arts and Aesthetics at JNU. Residencies are offered to artists and curators as well as to dancers and choreographers, both in India and overseas. With young artists and curators, support is extended with the opportunity to exhibit. Museum professionals are supported at the ITP programme conducted by the British Museum.

The Foundation used to have partnerships with SOAS University of London, Goldsmiths University of London, and with LAMDA.

The Foundation has also aided colleges and hospitals in Bangalore, Pune, and Mumbai.

The Charles Wallace India Trust

The Charles Wallace India Trust gives grants to Indians in the early or middle stages of their careers who are living in India and working or studying in the arts, heritage conservation, or the humanities. The grants enable successful applicants to achieve their artistic, academic, or professional ambitions through spending time in the United Kingdom—an excellent opportunity among study abroad scholarships for Indian students. The categories of grants available include: fully-funded awards; visiting fellowships in agreed subjects at specific institutions; grants for research and professional visits; grants for doctoral study; and grants to attend the Scottish Universities Summer School.

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) 

The AAUW’s International Fellowships are awarded for full-time study or research to women who are not United States citizens or permanent residents. Both graduate and postgraduate study at accredited institutions are supported, making it a notable option for study abroad scholarships for Indian students.

Margaret McNamara Education Grants (MMEG) 

The Margaret McNamara provides grants for women from developing countries who are committed to improving the lives of women and children in their home countries. Awards are granted to women studying at accredited universities in the US and Canada, and selected universities in South Africa and Latin America—another valuable resource for study abroad scholarships for Indian students.
